As a fellow reviewer has noted "this is the authentic Sullivan production". Yes indeed! The band parts for this production were transcribed from Sullivan's autographed manuscript score. As also noted the original Act Two is retained although it has to be noted that it is the second version of the finale that is used. Here the reprise of "O happy the lily" is presented in common time. For the initial few performances it was sung in 6/8 as in the Act One Finale. It's a pity that as with the TER/New Sadler's Wells HMS PINAFORE we could not have been given all the various versions of the Finale. Also missing is Robin's "Henceforth all the crimes" which replaced "For thirty-five years". Again the inclusion of this number as an appendix would have been nice, as would the Geoffrey Toye version of the overture which actually was recorded and released on an overture disc some years later.
However, these are minor quibbles considering that we have here the most complete original version of an opera that has been so consistently butchered since it's first appearance in 1887.
An excellent recording to be highly recommended.

A good dose of nostalgia never hurts. If you are bitten by the G & S bug you eventually succumb to wondering about the likes of Henry Lytton, Darrell Fancourt and Bertha Lewis, and the atmosphere of the early days, this collection gives answers in the most appealing manner. The recording engineers have done a spectacular job in resuscitating performances of nearly eighty years standing.
Understandably the definition of the choral singing is low but the recording techniques of the time and the skill of the modern sound engineers give a clear rendition of the soloists.
It is delightful to hear the precise enunciation delivered in "the Queen's English" and clipped manner of delivery.
In the Mikado, Bertha Lewis shines out in the great tradition of British contraltos underscored by a wry and experienced Henry Lytton.
The only disappointment in all four CDs is the omission of the Usher's introductory song "Now, Jurymen hear my advice" from Trial by Jury.
Overall a very reasonable investment for G & S lovers.

Amazon.co.uk Customer Comment
First issued in 1962 immediately following on from the 'with dialogue' recordings of PINAFORE, IOLANTHE, GONDOLIERS and PATIENCE, this recording of RUDDIGORE created quite a furore amongst G & S Fans when despite initial advertising indicating that the dialogue would be included, in the event it was absent. This was a great pity as there would certainly have been space over the four LP sides to include the dialogue. DECCA may have thought that the inclusion of the Original Overture as an entr'acte and the duet "The battle's roar" (normally cut from stage production at that time) would appease the critics, but the row rumbled on for some time. That row did however eventually result in the reinstatement on stage of the original act two finale, and the duet (although this was placed in act two).
The cast is a vintage one with John Reed and Kenneth Sandford both on top form, Mary Samson as a very sweet Rose, Thomas Round an excellent Dick Dauntless and Jean Allister guesting as Mad Margaret. Chorus and Orchestra excellent as ever under dear old Isidore Godfrey.
